A TAILWIND Acts 1:4-8 Pastor Alan Dionson May 15, 2022
Introduction:
Three kinds of winds: headwind, crosswind, and a tailwind
Aerodynamics is a field of study that uses design to reduce the drag of moving objects. Airplanes, cars, athletes and boats are a few examples that use aerodynamics. Typically, there are three kinds of winds: headwind, crosswind and a tailwind. A headwind is kind of a wind blowing opposing forward motion. A crosswind is a wind blowing in a direction not parallel to a course. These two kinds of winds slow a moving object and requires more effort and force to move. But a tailwind is a kind of wind that requires pushes an object to move faster with little effort.
As we continue our series on A Fresh Wind, we will look at the nature of the Holy Spirit who worked like a tailwind in the early church. We will see how He changes our prayer, our service to God, our study of God’s Word, and the power to become His witness to the world.
A. THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
1. The promise of the Father (Is. 42:1-4; Jo. 2:28-29)
2. The promise to the Son (Lk. 3:16; Lk. 4:1; 14; 18-19)
3. The promise to the Church (Lk. 24:45-49; Ac. 8:14-17; 19:1-5)
B. THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
1. He empowers us to become His witness (Ac. 1:8; 2:14)
2. He empowers us to do His work (Ac.3:4-9; 13:2-5; 13:50-52)
3. He empowers us to understand His word (Jn. 14:26; 2 Tim. 4:16)
4. He empowers us in our worship (Ac. 4:31; Rom. 8:26; 1 Cor.14:15)
Conclusion
The first work of the Holy Spirit is about identification. But the second work of the Holy Spirit is initiation to a powerful dimension of living for God.
