The church is a temple of the Holy Spirit, not a motel of the Holy Spirit.
A temple is a sacred place, a motel is a secular place.
The church is likened to a temple because it is indwelt by a Holy Resident, the Holy Spirit.
The believer’s body is sacred, being indwelt by the Holy Spirit. As believers, what should we do with our body?
1. Offer our body to God as a living sacrifice. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in
view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing
to God–this is your spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12.1).
2. Discipline our body like an athlete. “Therefore I do not run like a man running
aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make
it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be
disqualified for the prize” (1 Corinthians 9:26-27).
3. Treat our body as God’s property. “Do you not know that your body is a temple
of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not
your own; you were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20a).
4. Honor God with our body. “Therefore honor God with your body”
(1 Corinthians 6:20)
Believers are responsible to treat their body as a sacred temple, not as a secular
motel. Are you a temple, or a motel? Your answer to this question will make a world of difference in how you treat and use your body.
