The gospel of Mark has introduced Jesus Christ as “the Son of God”
(Mark 1:1). Being the Son of God, the Lord Jesus referred to Himself as “the Son of man” (Mark 10:45) because of His dual nature as fully God and fully man (John 1:1, 14; 10:30-33). As “the Son of man,” Jesus gave us the perfect model of the life well lived:
a life with clear mission for His coming to earth—”to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). “A ransom for many” means Jesus’ atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). The climax of Jesus’ service was the giving of His life on the cross for our sins, With the short but sacrificial life of Christ on earth as our model for the life well lived, the question is: “What are the criteria for the life well lived?” 1. Abundant material prosperity (Revelation 3:17-18)? 2. A life of leisure, pleasure, and comfort (Luke 12:15, 19)? 3. Or, a life of self-denial, taking up our cross to follow Jesus (Mark 8:34)? 4. Or, a life of self-sacrifice to serve and to give our life to bless others (Mark 10:45)? When we appear before the Judgement Seat of Christ, how well we had lived our lives on earth will be the basis for our rewards (2 Corinthians 5:9-10).
